Comparison Shop to Save Cash on Car Insurance

Save Cash on Car Insurance"You better shop around" isn't just dating advice from a retro pop-hit, it's also the best way to get the cheapest possible auto insurance.

Studies have shown that comparison shopping is a good way to save money on car insurance coverage, but according to J.D. Power & Associates, it's actually the single most effective method. This is because every auto insurance company offers slightly different products and a different variety of discounts. Some may offer a pay-as-you-drive program, for example, while others will merely give you a low-mileage discount.

In addition to saving money by comparing offers from multiple insurers, the British insurance company Swinton has results from a poll which point to the internet as being the best place to do your comparison shopping. In fact, they say, you can save up to 25% more on car insurance (assuming you have good credit and all other factors are in your favor) by doing your shopping online.

So how do you maximize the comparison shopping experience? Here are some tips:

  1. Provide accurate information. Quote engines aren't telepathic, so the better the information you input, the more accurate your insurance quote will be.
  2. Get quotes from at least three different insurers. Comparing only two companies won't give you an accurate representation of what's out there. Three is usually the magic number, but draw the line at five. At some point it becomes overkill.
  3. Ask questions. Even online insurance companies still have customer service phone numbers. If a quote seems unreasonably high or too good to be true, call and ask about it.

Comparison shopping is definitely the way to go, but always make sure the insurance company you choose has a good customer service record, and good track record with claims before you commit to a policy.
