Car Insurance and Summer Vacation

Car Insurance and Summer VacationIf you're planning to take a summer road trip this year, there are a couple of tweaks to your insurance that you might want to make before you hit the road.

First, you'll want to check with your insurance agent to see if you need to boost your liability coverage. Different states have different minimum requirements, and if you get into an accident the rules of the state where the crash took place will be in force, so make sure that you have an adequate amount of liability insurance and personal injury protection (PIP) coverage to meet the requirements of the state you'll be visiting that has the highest coverage limits.

If you're crossing the border (north to Canada or south to Mexico) with your car, you'll want to make sure you have insurance that covers you in those countries. While there are "instant Mexico insurance" businesses that still exist, these are not always the most reputable companies. Check with your existing insurance provider first.

The second thing to consider is who will be driving your car. If your spouse or partner isn't listed as a regular driver of the vehicle you're driving, add them. The same goes for your teen driver or your college-aged child who is home from school for the summer and taking part in the trip. Even if their driving will be limited to going from a hotel to a fast-food restaurant, everyone must be covered.

This is especially true if you are using a rental vehicle. Under rental insurance rules, only people named on the contract are allowed to be driving the vehicle, and coverage may not be in force if an unnamed driver is at the wheel, so be certain to check with the rental agent.

Summer road trips can be a great time for family connection and family fun. Don't try to conserve cash by not having adequate insurance coverage. You'll regret it, later.
